the first five

Today is our fifth anniversary. Five years ago today, I was sat at home, dressed to the nines, anxiously waiting for a blue Citroen Saxo to pull up, marking the start of my first date with the new guy at work.

Five years on, we have travelled far and wide together, extended our little family with two beautiful cat babies, laughed together, cried together (well, actually it was just me doing the crying), done almost everything together really. He has been a rock for me, the only person I can tell everything to without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. He really is my best friend.

We spent the day in Southwold, intending to have a picnic on the beach using the new picnic basket that my colleagues bought as my leaving gift. The weather seemed to be on form for a change, despite the forecast of rain, so we took Reg (Chris’s vintage Beetle) to give him a ride out after his recent service. I love going out in that car: the journey takes way longer, but it doesn’t matter, as the journey feels like part of the day out when you’re in Reg. We did have to stop for a minor overheating issue, but it was perfectly timed, as we had just passed a very interesting looking antiques shop with tin baths hanging outside…

toot toot! Cruising in the Reg-mobile

Arriving in Southwold to gale-force winds, we realised a beach picnic was not going to be the romantic experience we had anticipated (we realised this by trying, and boy did we get some bemused onlookers). We admitted defeat very quickly and had to eat our picnic in the car instead (NB sand in parma ham really does not enhance its flavour).

Despite the wind, we had a really lovely day. The beach huts at Southwold are very cute, the pier is all shiny and refurbished and lovely, and there is a glut of picture postcard houses and independent shops.

I was spoilt on the present front too РChris got me the pair of Hollie organic cotton jeans that I had been eyeballing in the Howies shop when we visited Wales last month, and made me a lovely breakfast of Huevos Rancheros (loosely based on this recipe) using eggs laid by chickens belonging to our friend Pat.

I can’t wait to see what the next five years will bring. I’m confident they won’t be boring!

It would make my day to hear from you :) The EU says I have to tell you that a cookie will be left on your computer if you leave a comment. The first time someone told me that, I was upset when an Oreo wasn't waiting on my keyboard upon my return...but hey, it's the law, so I gotta say it...
